Structure for Growth:

How Everyone Becomes an Apostle

How did the first church grow from 120 to 3120 in one day? Everyone was a minister, preaching, prophesying, serving, sharing. It doesn’t take an entire group to absorb an extra person; it takes each person being outreach-oriented. Consider these illustrations:

Diagram of small group structure

Step 1: Build a Healthy House Church.

A healthy group has strong friendship ties. Not all are equal, but all feel an equal part of the fellowship.

Step 2: Everyone Becomes a Minister

Having first built strong relationships with one another, each member of the group turns outward to meet new people, being like sheep sent among wolves. Each person who belongs to ChristDiagram of our church structure moves from being a disciple to becoming a discipler.[1] When a new household (oikos, sphere of influence) is reached, that group may become its own small group, with the evangelist/apostle serving as shepherd. When enough households (oikoi) are related to the original evangelist, and they are reaching a unique culture or geographic group, that group may become the nucleus of a new church. All the evangelist does is pray and pursue wise boldness.

[1] With the attitude of an evangelist or an apostle (“one sent”), the discipler prayerfully searches for a person of peace (a person of influence with some reputation who is receptive). Luke 10:5-12 (examples: Woman at the well in John 4; Lydia in Acts 16; Cornelius in Acts 10; Matthew in Matt. 9; the Gadarene demoniac in Mark 5; the rich young man in Matt. 19; the crippled beggar in Acts 3; the Ethiopian in Acts 8). That person becomes the connection to a whole new household or oikos. The evangelist prays for three people, waits for open doors, and loves unconditionally in Jesus’ name and strength, and let God bring the increase.
