Prayer Vigil
1
Kings 19:9 There [Elijah] came to a cave, where he spent the
night. But the LORD said to him, "What
are you doing here, Elijah?" 10
Elijah replied, "I have zealously served the LORD God Almighty. But
the people of Israel have broken their covenant with you, torn down your
altars, and killed every one of your prophets. I alone am left, and now
they are trying to kill me, too." 11
"Go out and stand before me on the mountain," the LORD told
him. And as Elijah stood there, the LORD passed by, and a mighty
windstorm hit the mountain. It was such a terrible blast that the rocks
were torn loose, but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there
was an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. 12
And after the earthquake there was a fire, but the LORD was not in the
fire. And after the fire there was the sound of a gentle whisper. 13
When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his cloak and went out and
stood at the entrance of the cave. And a voice said, "What are you doing here,
Elijah?" 14
He replied again, "I have zealously served the LORD God Almighty.
But the people of Israel have broken their covenant with you, torn down
your altars, and killed every one of your prophets. I alone am left, and
now they are trying to kill me, too." .
. . 18 Yet I will preserve seven thousand others in Israel who
have never bowed to Baal or kissed him!"
Serving the Lord can be discouraging and lonely, depressing or even
frightening. Just ask Elijah. When you or I might feel all alone in
serving God, however, he just might come to us with a very good
question: “What are you doing here?”
That is the question that I invite all of us to allow the Lord to ask us
this next weekend, as we enter into a 24-hour prayer vigil. From 6pm
Friday evening until Saturday at 6pm, we will be seeking the Lord for
his answer to that question for each of us. Come for any or all of the
vigil at the building,
or set aside some time wherever you go to meet with God.
After we have each had a chance to hear individually from the Lord on
that question, we will gather together at 6:00 on Saturday evening to
share our answers with each other and to seek a united vision for where
Christ's Community in Price Hill goes from here.
Good days, hopeful days, lie ahead for us all. Let’s find out what
they will look like!

BARNABAS
THE APOSTLE
(11
JUNE NT)
"Joseph,
a Levite, born in Cyprus, whom the apostles called Barnabas (son of
encouragement), sold a field he owned, brought the money, and turned it
over to the apostles." (Acts 4:36f). This is the first mention we
have of Barnabas.
His
new name fits what we know of his actions. When Saul (or Paul) came to
Jerusalem after his conversion, most of the Christians there wanted
nothing to do with him. They had known him as a persecutor and an enemy
of the Church. But Barnabas was willing to give him a second chance. He
looked him up, spoke with him, and brought him to see the other
Christians, vouching for him. Later, Paul and Barnabas went on a
missionary journey together, taking Mark with them. Part way, Mark
turned back and went home. When Paul and Barnabas were about to set out
on another such journey, Barnabas proposed to take Mark along, and Paul
was against it, saying that Mark had shown himself undependable.
Barnabas wanted to give Mark a second chance, and so he and Mark went
off on one journey, while Paul took Silas and went on another.
Apparently Mark responded well to the trust given him by the "son
of encouragement," since we find that Paul later speaks of him as a
valuable assistant (2 Tim 4:11; see also Col 4:10 and Phil 24).
